Overview

  • Smash chalk and turn it into paint!

Materials

  • Chalk

  • Ziploc Bags

  • Mallet/Rolling Pin

  • Muffin Tin

  • Paint Brushes

  • Water

Steps

  • Break chalk into pieces and put inside ziploc bags

  • Make sure to seal the bag tightly.

  • Smash the chalk with a mallet, hammer, rolling pin, heavy book, whatever the kids can find.

  • Pour the chalk dust into a muffin tin or small jars, etc., and add drops of water until it is a paint-like consistency.

  • Take it outside and paint on “chalkable” surfaces.

Things to say

  • What do you think is heavy enough to break this chalk?

  • Do you think we can find something even heavier?

  • How do you think we can make the pieces even smaller?

  • How does the chalk change when we add the water?

  • How long does it take to dissolve the chalk?

More to do

  • Mix colors in one bag, create a new color!

  • Bring the mallet outside and see what else you can smash!
